Meier Skis and Snowboards

Looking for a Ski and Snowboard brand that aligns with your values?

How about Skis and Snowboards made from locally sourced materials (and a bar attached to the Factory)?

To find out more behind how Meier Skis got its start and what’s in store for the future, Josh interviews Meier Skis co-founder, Ted Eynon

More about the episode...

Josh sits down with Meier Skis co-founder Ted Eynon. Meier Skis and Snowboards is a company founded by Ted Eynon and Matt Cudmore that are not only known for the sustainably made, high performance skis but, as the local ski manufacture with a watering hole attached. That’s right there is a full bar integrated into their ski shop/ workshop combining ski making and après, the true before and after of skiing. Although, it’s a feature that brings in quite the crowd, the gem of Meier’s operation is, of course, their skis. While, Meier has ambition to overtake the ski industry, no corners are cut when it comes to sustainability, beginning with the Meier team using locally sourced materials when at all possible. At the end of the day, you know you are getting a quality made ski, and can be sure that sustainability is held to the highest regard while being manufactured. Join us as we dive into the past, present, and future of Meier Skis and Snowboards.

Show Notes

  • What is Meier all about?

    • ...It’s about the fun. What we’re trying to do here is extend that fun experience from the mountain and on the snow, down into the actual ski shop where the skies are produced…”

  • How did you get into building skis?

    • “...I moved out to Colorado in 2000. Just a lifelong skier and from my angle I just wanted to take it to the next level and get involved in the industry…”

  • How did you get connected with your co-founder Matt Cudmore?

    • “...It wasn’t a week or so later, meier skis and Matt had a pretty larg article in the Denver Post…”

  • Did you have any background in manufacturing skis?

    • “..Matt is the one who came up with the idea of using a clear topsheet...his brother influenced Matt’s direction in using locally harvested wood from colorado such as the aspen and the beetle kill pine…”

  • What was the prototyping process like?

    • “It’s a bit of an iterative process, which at this point I think we have a bit more structured...there are so many things that ultimately go into designed a ski and what that ski ultimately does…”

  • What is something unique about Meier Skis?

    • “I think it was a secret until you opened up the interview, we have a bar attached to our factory… it just seemed like a natural extension as far as what we’re about…we set up a bar that’s actually made of our ski cores...”

  • What is the dynamic of the Meier team?

    • “I would say the culture of meier and the crew that works here is right in line with our customer base and, that is people who are passionate about skiing and like to have fun, on and off the slopes…”

  • What has Meier’s growth been like since you got started?

    • “I think, for us, it’s been about making sure that you don’t screw it up. We believe we have something very special and we put our skis up against any brand in the world regardless of size. What we have chose to do is grow this business the old fashion way. One person at a time, one pair of skis at a time…”

  • Did you have any mentors with building Meier Skis?

    • “With Meier Skis, I don’t think so. Really it’s been my business life prior to that; Meier Skis it’s kind of been just jumping into a raging river where you don’t know what’s going to come around the bend…”

  • What is Meier Skis commitment to sustainability?

    • “We’re not willing to sacrifice performance purely for some eco friendly material. We’re constantly on the hunt to find more locally sourced materials, eco friendly materials and try to produce skis in a more sustainable fashion. While we do that we still have a long ways to go…”

  • What has been one of the hardest parts about starting and building Meier Skis?

    • “I think it starts with this romantic idea and notion that we’re making skis using locally harvested wood...we want to make things locally, we want it made in the USA, we want to use local materials as much as possible but, we want to produce a ski that’s gonna compete with these big brands…”

  • What would you say is one of your greatest fears?

    • “I don’t know that we necessarily think of what our greatest fear is. I think we look for those challenges and obstacles and try to put our heads together to think of a way to overcome those obstacles…”

  • What would you say are some of the biggest mistakes you guys have made?

    • “I think getting ahead of the curve schedule wise. It’s been a challenge as a small growing business that’s trying to do things uniquely…”

  • What advice would you give to someone who wanted to start a business?

    • “Make sure that you’re doing something that is unique and different...Make sure it’s not something that everyone else is already doing…”

  • Where do you see Meier headed into the future?

    • “I think in the short term the goal is to capitalize and leverage the space that we’ve built here in Denver...We’ve always had a goal to be the largest US manufacturer of skis, by that I mean, where we are actually producing the skis ourselves…”

  • What is the best part about running Meier Skis?

    • “It’s probably just seeing the vision evolve overtime...ultimately wanting to be the largest ski brand in the US, to achieve that goal you need the customer base and passion...At the end of the day we might have a beer or two, chat about things, and spitball new ideas for tomorrow…”
